Our Shows
Our horticultural show tradition was started by the Roehampton Horticultural and Cottage Garden Society in the 1870s. Competition in the vegetable and flower categories was fierce and the prizes were highly sought after. The shows were like a village fete. The Roehampton Estate Garden Society, founded in 1922, also hosted annual shows.
Since the two societies merged in 1955 there have been two shows per year. The cups and trophies presented 100 years ago are still presented today.
At our RGS shows, members of the society and other local gardeners show flowers, fruit and vegetables. Cookery classes are included. The classes are judged according to Royal Horticultural Society rules, but most of all the show is a celebration of the wonderful and delicious produce from our allotments.
Everyone is welcome the day of the show to view the entries, buy plants and produce, and enjoy homemade cakes and tea – outside if the weather is kind. There is also the opportunity to bid for produce in the auction at the end of the show.
